
AJWS's grants department supports non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and community-based organizations (CBOs) undertaking grassroots human rights and development initiatives in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. AJWS supports organizations working in the areas of sustainable livelihoods and development, community health, education for all, community engagement in conflict and emergencies, and community-led human rights campaigns. AJWS has nine partners in Nigeria.
American Jewish World Service is seeking a short-term consultant to:
1- Visit AJWS partners to assess their accomplishments, challenges, capacities, lessons learned and future priorities.
2- Assess the human rights and development context that is impacting the work of our partners and of civil society organizations in Nigeria.
3- Analyze current social, political and economic trends in Nigeria that might impact our partners.
4- Document funding trends and opportunities in the country to identify the most funded issue areas and gaps in funding.
5- Advise AJWS on funding priorities, including geographical regions, populations or strategic directions for consideration so as to improve AJWS’s effectiveness as a grassroots human rights funder.
Scope of work:
- The consultant is expected to familiarize her/himself with available AJWS and partner documents and finalize a work plan in consultation with AJWS and its partners within two weeks of the start of this consultancy.
- The consultant will visit each partner to meet its staff, board members and stakeholders, including program participants.
- The consultant will analyze and share findings with AJWS in a final report no later than six weeks after the commencement of the evaluation. Preliminary findings will be shared halfway through the evaluation in order for AJWS to provide feedback. The final report will highlight the main five points described in the job description. In addition, it will include specific recommendations in regard to our grantmaking processes, funding priorities, trends and opportunities in country.
Duration:
The consultancy will last approximately 8 weeks. The consultant will start work immediately once the contract is signed. At least three weeks of travel in Nigeria are required.
• Expertise in one or more of the following thematic areas: human rights; HIV/AIDS; economic justice; child protection; adolescent girls programming; and advocacy.
• Expertise in designing, evaluating, and/or implementing human rights programs targeting marginalized populations including people living with HIV/AIDS and sexually diverse communities.
• Experience with NGO capacity building, rights-based approach to development, appreciative inquiry strongly preferred.
• Strong writing and analytical skills.
• At least one local language for direct communication with different stakeholders including project beneficiaries.
