UNICEF Nigeria seeks the services of experienced Staff Counselor who will under the technical guidance of the UNICEF HQ Senior Staff Counsellor, the operational supervision of Chief of Operations and the input from Human Resources, Staff Association the Staff Counsellor develop and implement a staff wellbeing programme aimed at attending to the psychosocial needs of UNICEF staff and management as well as reinforce healthy work practices. This work is done from the preventive and curative perspective at the individual, team and organizational levels in UNICEF Nigeria.
The successful candidate will be expected to carry out the following duties - Assess psychosocial needs of the UNICEF staff relevant for both the mental health of the staff. - Develop and implement a Staff Wellbeing Program addressing the psychosocial needs - Provide individual and/or group counseling addressing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in the form of evidence based trauma treatment modalities. - Ensure access to individual counseling of staff and family members for a variety of issues, related to both work (stress, trauma, interpersonal conflicts, harassment, job insecurity) and personal (family, marital, children or finance related problems) that affect the work environment and staff welfare. - Develop a program for managers including workshops and guidance encouraging healthy workplace practices - Recommend suitable staff support strategies to managers during emergencies and following evacuations. - Maximize the pool of mechanisms/resources for staff and family members by maintaining close contacts with members of the UN Staff Counsellors Network and other local/regional mental health professionals/ resources outside the UN system, e.g. NGOs, private practitioners. - Implement, train and supervise a Peer Support Volunteer programme for UNICEF (and other interested agencies) in Nigeria - Provide training and awareness raising activities on trauma, stress management, resiliency and healthy workplace practices - Conduct regular staff support visits to the Field Offices - Administrative duties, including keeping statistics, participating in Divisional meetings and other activities, completing reporting requirements, etc. - Any other duties assigned by the Representative and/or Chief of Operations in partnership/consult with HR, Staff Association and the Staff Counselor in New York.
Minimum qualification & competencies: - Advanced University Degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology or a related mental health profession.
- Additional training in evidence based trauma treatment modalities as well as a broad range of related fields, such as alcohol/substance abuse, family counseling, training, stress management. - Minimum five years of national and especially international work experience in staff support, mental health, cross cultural communications, counseling, and related areas, preferably gained within the UN system or international development/humanitarian aid sector. - Fluency in English. Knowledge of other UN Language desirable. - Communicates effectively to varied audiences, including during formal public speaking. - Sets high standards for quality of work and consistently achieves project goals. - Able to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment. - Analyzes and integrates potentially conflicting numerical, verbal and other data from a number of sources. - Negotiates effectively by exploring a range of possibilities. - Translates strategic direction into plans and objectives. - Quickly builds rapport with individuals and groups; maintains an effective network of individuals across organizational departments. - Contributes and tries out innovative approaches and insights - Awareness of the need for Self-Care and personal Counseling; prudence in adhering to professional boundaries
