Even before the interview, you can impress potential employers and get your foot in the door. All you have to do is produce an impressive CV.

This may sound easier said than done, but there are a few simple tips that you should follow when putting your CV together.

Cover the basics

It is vital that your CV includes your personal details. While this may sound obvious, a surprisingly high number of people forgot to include an address, email address or contact number on their CV.

These sound be clearly marked, and at the top of the CV.

Keep it short

A CV short be a short summing up of your skills and experience, and most employers will emphasise the short.

Your CV should be no longer than three pages. Ideally it should fit on two sides of A4.

If it is longer, you may find that you are including details that are not relevant to the job you are applying for.

Tailor it for each job

Every employer will have their own specific needs, and you should tailor your CV to highlight how you match these requirements.

Go through each job description and note which skills are emphasised. You can then tailor your CV to place these more prominently.

You may want to add a list of key skills at the top of your CV, below the personal details, if you want to draw attention to skills and experience that may otherwise be hidden further down.

Cover career gaps

If there are significant gaps in your employment history, you should go over these in your CV. If you leave these empty, this may be a cause for concern for a potential employer.

You may have had to leave work to care for others, or you may have simply found it difficult to find another job after being made redundant. You CV should show that you used this time to do something.

Hobbies?

Many people include a section on hobbies and interests. However, you should only include this if it is relevant to the job. If your hobbies include team working or are creative, then they may be relevant to many roles.

However, don’t put this in just to fill up space, as this will be obvious to the employer.

Follow these simple steps, and you can put together a CV that will stand out from the crowd and impress potential employers.
